This task force was assembled as the result of a resolution that
was passed at the 2000 Diocesan Convention. The resolution is
quoted in its entirety at the end of this introduction.
The
topic of sexuality is a controversial one in any context. People
within the Church have widely varying ideas about what constitutes
moral behavior in regard to sexuality. The important thing to
focus on is that we can retain our integrity as individuals and
unity as a Church while disagreeing with each other. The way to
do that is through compassionate and continued dialogue.
To
that end, the Task Force has completed several projects that we
hope will engender genuine and respectful sharing and conversation
within congregations. We invite you to join this journey using
the tools we have provided. Books and a list of resources may be obtained through the Diocese.
R9-00
Homosexual Persons and the Full Life of the Church:
Resolved: That the 2000 Convention of the Diocese of Northern
California urge congregations and every other church group and
organization to facilitate genuine and respectful dialogue among
parishioners of varying sexual orientation and identifications,
recognising that they share one Lord, one faith, one baptism.
Resolved: That a Task Force comprised of four people, two
clergy and two lay, from each Deanery and three at-large members,
either clergy or lay, for a total of nineteen members be formed
and appointed by the Bishop which shall, under the spiritual and
pastoral direction of the Bishop and in dialogue with the Parishes
and Missions of the Diocese, prepare a report on issues identified
by the Task Force and that this report be placed before the 2002
Diocesan Convention.
